Overview
Germany has had a childcare pension credit system since 1986, awarding pension entitlements to main child-carers (most often women) for up to three years. Yet the “motherhood pension gap” in Germany remains wide. Did the policy simply miss its mark? Our analysis shows that childcare credits have substantially reduced the motherhood pension gap for women born between 1952 and 1959. However, the policy’s overall impact is limited – because of a broader family policy context that often makes it difficult for mothers to return to paid employment after childbirth.
