How do ethnic boundaries evolve in increasingly diverse societies? Cross-ethnic partnerships can reveal the social distance between groups and the strength of the boundaries separating them. But why are some people more likely than others to cross these boundaries? And what happens in the next generation? Who do children of mixed couples partner with? Population register data from the Netherlands allow us to track partnership choices within families and across generations. Comparing siblings shows how children raised in the same immigrant family can differ systematically in whether they form cross-ethnic partnerships. Following the children of ethnically mixed couples into adulthood shows whether crossing an ethnic boundary in one generation makes those boundaries less important in the next.
