Fellow

Nicole Hiekel is a sociologist studying how partnership and family trajectories shape people’s life courses, including their emotional and psychological wellbeing. Working at the intersection of sociology and demography, she leads the Independent Research Group “Gender Inequalities and Fertility” at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research. Her research investigates how gender norms, relationship dynamics, and fertility intentions contribute to the reproduction of social inequalities, using longitudinal and dyadic approaches to trace the mechanisms through which population diversity emerges.
