DESCRIPTION:On April 3rd\, 2024\, Professor Raj Bhopal CBE will be a guest of the Einstein Center Population Diversity (ECPD) for a Distinguished Lecture with the title “The benefits and harms of ethnic group classification in multicultural societies: public health and social perspectives.” \nClick this link to download an abstract for the upcoming Distinguished Lecture. \n\nThe Lecture will be in English. The number of seats is limited\, so make sure to sign up through this online RSVP form.\n \n\n\nAbout Professor Raj Bhopal CBE\, DSc (hon)\, MD\, BSc\, MBChB\, MPH\, FRCP(E)\, FFPH \nRaj Bhopal was born in India\, brought up in Glasgow\, Scotland from 1955\, and studied medicine in Edinburgh University (1971-1978). He is a medically qualified Professor of Public Health in Edinburgh University\, holding the John Usher Chair of Public health and the post of honorary consultant in public health with NHS Lothian from 1999 until he retired in May 2018. He is now Emeritus Professor of Public Health at the University of Edinburgh. Earlier\, he held posts including Professor of Public Health and Epidemiology at Newcastle University (1991-1998)\, and prior to that Lecturer in Public Health at Glasgow University (1985-1988). \nHis books include Concepts of Epidemiology\, Migration\, Ethnicity\, Race and Health\, and Epidemic of Cardiovascular Disease and Diabetes: Explaining the Phenomenon in South Asians Worldwide (all Oxford University Press). \nHe has published on many aspects of public health epidemiology\, with over 300 research and scholarly papers\, especially on ethnic variations in health status including CVD and type 2 diabetes\, but most recently on the COVID-19 pandemic. He has served on numerous organisations and committees\, been the leader of many research projects\, and held leadership roles in the NHS. He was the chairman and leader of both the 19th World Congress of Epidemiology in 2011\, and the first World Congress on Migration\, Ethnicity\, Race and Health in 2018\, both in Edinburgh. \nProfessor Bhopal has enjoyed several honours and prizes\, most notably being appointed CBE (Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) by her Majesty the Queen in 2001. \n

The Presentation of Benefits and Risks of Breast Cancer Screening. \nWe are excited to welcome Giovanni Fattore  from Università Bocconi for a discussion on the communication of benefits and risks associated with breast cancer screening! \nAbstract: \n\nAfter more than 40 years of implementation in middle- to high-income countries\, the risk-benefit profile of breast cancer screening (BCS) remains a topic of debate within the scientific community. European guidelines recommend biennial BCS for women aged 50 to 69 while also emphasizing the importance of fully informing women about its advantages and risks. To assess the consistency of information provided\, I reviewed BCS materials available on institutional websites across 30 European countries. The findings reveal significant variations: in some countries\, women are not explicitly advised to undergo screening but are instead encouraged and aided to make an autonomous decision without a clear recommendation.
