SUMMARY:LECTURE SERIES: Older Adults' Complex Family Lives in the 21st Century: Implications for End-of-Life Preparations and Well-Being
DESCRIPTION:Advances in medical technologies mean that older adults are living longer than ever before\, with most dying of chronic diseases that have protracted symptoms and require difficult decisions about end-of-life care. Most older adults rely on their families for advance care planning\, advocacy\, and decision-making – raising concerns about the rising numbers of adults growing old without a spouse or children. This presentation examines how: (1) marital trajectories and parental statuses affect advance care planning\, a critical step for attaining a ‘good death\,” and (2) marital and parental statuses affect quality of death outcomes (e.g.\, palliation\, respectful care) as assessed by the decedent’s proxy. Analyses are based on the Health and Retirement Study (HRS)\, National Health and Aging Trends (NHATS)\, and Survey of Health\, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) surveys. SUMMARY:TUESDAY DIALOGUES: The mismatch between the need for migration and resistance to migration - what direction should a forward-looking migration policy take?
DESCRIPTION:Zum Mismatch zwischen Migrationsbedarfen und Migrationsabwehr – welchen Kompass sollte eine zukunftsorientierte Migrationspolitik anlegen? \nThere is a growing contradiction between structural migration needs and the political resistance to migration\, which raises fundamental questions about the ability of modern immigrant societies to steer their course. This lecture analyzes this area of tension in light of empirical data and theoretical concepts from migration research. It discusses what normative and analytical orientation is needed to develop a consistent and forward-looking migration policy. \nZwischen strukturellem Migrationsbedarf und politischer Migrationsabwehr besteht ein wachsender Widerspruch\, der grundlegende Fragen zur Steuerungsfähigkeit moderner Einwanderungsgesellschaften aufwirft. SUMMARY:LECTURE SERIES: The (Unintended) Consequences of Changing Polygyny Legislation: A Case Study of Three sub-Saharan Countries.
DESCRIPTION:Across Africa\, shifts in the legal status of polygyny – from prohibition to liberalization – are transforming the institutional landscape of marriage. Yet\, the effects of these legal reforms and their implications for women’s outcomes remain poorly understood. Drawing on Demographic and Health Surveys and employing event-study designs\, this talk examines the consequences of recent legislative changes in Benin\, Kenya and Nigeria on the incidence of polygyny and women’s decision-making power within households.
