Since the outbreak of the war\, approximately 1.2 million Ukrainian nationals have sought protection in Germany—more than in any other European country. Four years later\, how are they doing in Germany? Which groups have been more successful\, which ones less? What are the remaining challenges? How can long-term prospects be secured—both for these refugees themselves and for the host society? \nIm Februar dieses Jahres jährt sich die russische Invasion in der Ukraine zum vierten Mal. DESCRIPTION:Geschlechter- und diversitätssensible Gesundheitsversorgung \nIn Europe\, there is a social consensus on providing high-quality healthcare to everyone. Greater data availability\, alongside traditional and AI-supported evaluations and interventions\, enables much greater personalisation. To mark International Women’s Day\, we would like to discuss: How well are women\, men and non-binary people cared for in terms of health\, and who are we reaching with preventive measures? What data gaps regarding gender and diversity remain\, and how can we address them? Gertraud Turu Stadler will present German and international examples and ideas for solutions as a basis for discussion. \nIn Europa besteht der gesellschaftliche Konsens\, qualitativ hochwertige Gesundheitsversorgung für alle sicherzustellen. Zunehmende Datenverfügbarkeit und traditionelle und KI-gestützte Auswertungen und Interventionen ermöglichen eine viel stärkere Personalisierung. SUMMARY:LECTURE SERIES: Individuals’ and Partners’ Life Courses and Biological Markers of Health
DESCRIPTION:Studies in social sciences adopting the life course approach have shown that the sequencing\, timing\, and duration of events in the work\, partnership\, and fertility domains shape health in late adulthood and old age.   \nDrawing from several ongoing empirical contributions\, the lecture discusses two advances in the field: first\, the explicit inclusion of partners’ life courses\, that are currently absent or\, at best\, indirectly captured through individuals’ own life courses; second\, the adoption of objective health measures derived from the collection of biospecimens (i.e. biomarkers)\, that are now increasingly available in large-scale surveys and can complement self-assessed measures of health by capturing physiological responses to social exposures more directly.   \nEmpirical analyses use linked retrospective life histories and cross-sectional blood-based biomarkers data at age 50+ in Europe (SHARE)\, United States (HRS)\, and the United Kingdom (ELSA)\, and rely on sequence analysis methods. \nA lecture by Davide Gritti\, Department of Sociology and Social Research\, University of Trento (IT). \nTo tegister for the event\, please click here. \nTo download the poster\, please click here. \n \n

DESCRIPTION:Kinder mit Behinderungen in Familien und in der Schule \nChildren with disabilities are all too often an invisible population\, despite numbering more than 240 million worldwide and around 3.5 million in Europe. What does it mean to live day to day with a child or a sibling with a disability within the family? And what spillover effects arise in classroom dynamics when children are exposed to the disability of a classmate? This talk addresses these questions\, examining the consequences for families and schools\, and concludes by highlighting relevant policy implications. \nKinder mit Behinderungen sind allzu oft eine unsichtbare Bevölkerungsgruppe\, obwohl es weltweit mehr als 240 Millionen und in Europa rund 3\,5 Millionen gibt. Was bedeutet es\, im Alltag mit einem Kind oder einem Geschwister mit einer Behinderung in der Familie zu leben? SUMMARY:TUESDAY DIALOGUES: Migration and the Media
DESCRIPTION:Migration und Medien \nMigration has a significant demographic\, political\, and social impact on Germany—and is also a central topic in media coverage. This talk presents the findings of a study conducted by the Erich Brost Institute for International Journalism for the EU-funded We-ID: Identities – Migration – Democracy  project\, which links reporting on migration in the German media with perceptions from the Turkish and Russian diasporas.The findings show a highly politicized\, often problem-oriented portrayal of migration and limited visibility of migrant perspectives. The talk focuses on Germany\, but broadens the perspective by embedding it in an international comparative study (conducted by the Erich Brost Institute for International Journalism\, funded by the German Foreign Office) on migration reporting in eight African and seven European countries\, including Germany. \nMigration prägt Deutschland demografisch\, politisch und gesellschaftlich nachhaltig – und steht zugleich im Zentrum medialer Aushandlungsprozesse. Der Vortrag präsentiert Ergebnisse einer vom Erich-Brost-Institut für internationalen Journalismus durchgeführten Studie für das EU-geförderte Projekt We-ID: Identities – Migration – Democracy\, die Migrationsberichterstattung in deutschen Medien mit Wahrnehmungen aus der türkischen und russischen Diaspora verbindet. Die Befunde zeigen eine stark politisierte\, häufig problemorientierte Darstellung von Migration sowie eine begrenzte Sichtbarkeit migrantischer Perspektiven. DESCRIPTION:Zum Mismatch zwischen Migrationsbedarfen und Migrationsabwehr – welchen Kompass sollte eine zukunftsorientierte Migrationspolitik anlegen? \nThere is a growing contradiction between structural migration needs and the political resistance to migration\, which raises fundamental questions about the ability of modern immigrant societies to steer their course. This lecture analyzes this area of tension in light of empirical data and theoretical concepts from migration research.
