SUMMARY:LECTURE SERIES: Individuals’ and Partners’ Life Courses and Biological Markers of Health
DESCRIPTION:Studies in social sciences adopting the life course approach have shown that the sequencing\, timing\, and duration of events in the work\, partnership\, and fertility domains shape health in late adulthood and old age.   \nDrawing from several ongoing empirical contributions\, the lecture discusses two advances in the field: first\, the explicit inclusion of partners’ life courses\, that are currently absent or\, at best\, indirectly captured through individuals’ own life courses; second\, the adoption of objective health measures derived from the collection of biospecimens (i.e. biomarkers)\, that are now increasingly available in large-scale surveys and can complement self-assessed measures of health by capturing physiological responses to social exposures more directly.   \nEmpirical analyses use linked retrospective life histories and cross-sectional blood-based biomarkers data at age 50+ in Europe (SHARE)\, United States (HRS)\, and the United Kingdom (ELSA)\, and rely on sequence analysis methods. \nA lecture by Davide Gritti\, Department of Sociology and Social Research\, University of Trento (IT). \nTo tegister for the event\, please click here. \nTo download the poster\, please click here. \n \n

SUMMARY:LECTURE SERIES: Gender inequality in life courses\, financial resource accumulation\, and later life outcomes
DESCRIPTION:This lecture will discuss the interplay between work and caregiving across the life course\, and their implications for financial well-being and wealth accumulation\, as well as working time preferences and subjective well-being. \nThe analytical framework is grounded in a life course policy model that integrates redistribution though the welfare state and the family. The analysis draws on international data from the Survey of Health\, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) to explore cross-national variations\, complemented by detailed administrative and survey data focusing on the German context. \nThe findings reveal a complex and multifaceted landscape of work-family constraints and opportunities that influence women’s life trajectories and well-being\, shaped by both cultural norms and institutional arrangements. \nA presentation by Katja Möhring (University of Bamberg). \nThis event is part of the Social Policy Research Colloquium. For registration\, and if you have any questions\, please send an email to socialpolicygroup@hertie-school.org

SUMMARY:LECTURE SERIES: Families Beyond Now: Diversity\, Change\, and Belonging
DESCRIPTION:Families are changing – across generations\, cultures\, and borders. Join us to explore\, play and imagine together how diversity shapes belonging today and what families of tomorrow might look like. \n\n\nWhat to expect:\nFamilies are more diverse than ever before. Migration\, aging\, new household forms\, and shifting cultural values are reshaping what “family” means across societies. But beyond the big trends\, family is also about our everyday lives – who we rely on\, who we feel connected to\, and how policies and politics shape our possibilities to live together. What does family actually mean? \nOur journey together during the Workshop: \n\nKick-off with stories & trends: we will begin with a short input highlighting key global trends from our current research and why family matters in today’s world.\nGet involved: through interactive elements\, you’ll be invited to share your own ideas and reflections: Who counts as family? How should societies adapt to growing family diversity?\nImagine and share the future: together\, we’ll brainstorm what families might look like in 2050 and beyond. Using a shared visual board\, all participants will create a collective “map of future families.”\n\nWhy join:\nThis workshop is not a lecture but a space for exchange and participation. You’ll connect your own experiences with wider social questions\, discover surprising perspectives\, and help imagine inclusive futures for families across borders and generations. \nAny participants are welcome: researchers\, science communicators\, curious and socially engaged adults of the public\, families and young audiences. \n  \n\n\n\nFor more information\, please visit the event website. \nFor the registration\, please click here.

SUMMARY:LECTURE SERIES: Intimate partner violence: Data challenges and policy solutions
DESCRIPTION:Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a widespread issue with serious and far-reaching consequences for individuals and societies. Beyond physical violence\, IPV involves patterns of psychological violence and coercive control that obstruct victims’ wellbeing\, safety\, and autonomy. Yet\, much of this violence remains hidden and insufficiently understood\, since we lack reliable data that sheds light on the scope of IPV as well as its drivers and effects. \nThis joint event of the Hertie School\, the German Youth Institute\, and the Einstein Center for Population Diversity brings together experts from academia\, government\, and public institutions to explore how IPV can be measured and data gaps can be addressed across different contexts\, aiming to identify pathways toward more robust prevention\, protection\, and support strategies that reflect the full spectrum of IPV. \n\nProgram: \n18:00-18:15     Welcome\n18:15-18:30     Keynote by Dr. Christoph Liel\, German Youth Institute\n18:15-18:45     Keynote by Prof. Dr. Janina Steinert\, Technical University Munich\n18:45-19:30    Podium discussion moderated by Prof. Dr. Michaela Kreyenfeld\, Hertie School: \n\nPD Dr. Christina Boll\, German Youth Institute\nDr. Christoph Liel\, German Youth Institute\nDr. Miriam Schroer-Hippel\, Department of the National Rapporteur Mechanism on gender-based violence at the German Institute for Human Rights\nProf. Dr. Janina Steinert\, Technical University Munich\nDepartment for Gender Equality (tba)\, Federal Ministry for Education\, Family Affairs\, Senior Citizens\, Women and Youth\n\n19:30-20:00    Q & A\n20:00-20:15    Wrap-Up by Lena Wagner\, Humboldt Universität and Stefania Molina\, Hertie School\n20:15-21:00    Get together \n\nThe event requires prior registration. SUMMARY:LECTURE SERIES: Freedom of Science\, Diversity\, and Public Health
DESCRIPTION:Scientific freedom is facing increasing pressure as democratic values are challenged and public investment in research is curtailed. This joint event of the Hertie School and the Einstein Center Population Diversity explores the consequences of restricting academic inquiry — particularly in public health\, gender\, and diversity studies — and highlights the importance of defending open\, inclusive\, and well-funded research environments. To discuss these urgent issues\, the event will feature a podium discussion with: \n\nSeth Holmes (University of California\, Berkeley)\nBeate Kampmann (Charité Berlin)\nChristina Pagel (University College London)\nMartin Rennert (Einstein Foundation Berlin)\nCornelia Woll (Hertie School)\n\nSeats are limited! SUMMARY:LECTURE SERIES: Variability in Breast Cancer Screening Information Across Europe: A Reflection of Uncertainty?
DESCRIPTION:Together\, the ECPD and Hertie School are presenting: \n🩺 How Much Should You Know? The Presentation of Benefits and Risks of Breast Cancer Screening. \nWe are excited to welcome Giovanni Fattore  from Università Bocconi for a discussion on the communication of benefits and risks associated with breast cancer screening! \nAbstract: \n\nAfter more than 40 years of implementation in middle- to high-income countries\, the risk-benefit profile of breast cancer screening (BCS) remains a topic of debate within the scientific community. European guidelines recommend biennial BCS for women aged 50 to 69 while also emphasizing the importance of fully informing women about its advantages and risks. To assess the consistency of information provided\, I reviewed BCS materials available on institutional websites across 30 European countries. The findings reveal significant variations: in some countries\, women are not explicitly advised to undergo screening but are instead encouraged and aided to make an autonomous decision without a clear recommendation. This choice may stem from the high degree of uncertainty surrounding the benefits and harms of screening\, leading some public health authorities to shift the decision-making burden onto patients rather than issuing definitive guidelines.\n  \nAt one glance:\n📅 Monday\, 10 March 2025⏰ 12:30 – 13:30 (CET)\n📍 Hertie School\, Room 1.61\n💻 On-site and online via Teams\n📩 Register for online participation: socialpolicygroup@hertie-school.org\n🥪 Join us from 12:00 for a light lunch and informal networking! \nThis colloquium provides a valuable opportunity to engage with experts in health policy and social research. Don’t miss this chance to explore effective communication strategies in medical decision-making! \n
